ABOUT OUM

Malaysia’s first open and distance education provider, Open University Malaysia (OUM) was officially launched in 2002. Answering the Government’s call for a democratized education system, OUM provides the opportunity to many Malaysians who otherwise would not have the chance to pursue higher education. With its flexible learning system, OUM offers a variety of courses, catering for Malaysia’s on-going human capital development efforts.

LEARNING METHODS

Constantly striving to improve, OUM offers the most innovative and flexible learning methods. The blended learning method applied in OUM is an internationally recognized learning technique that delivers learning materials through different channels.

Blended learning involves 3 modes of learning, and they are:

1. Self-managed Learning

Self-managed Learning requires learners to study independently at their own pace. Learners will receive a high quality study pack for each course which consists of:
* Course Guides/Modules;
* Textbooks and supplementary readings; and
* Multimedia learning materials such as audio / video tapes and CD-ROMs.

2. Online Learning

Facilities for collaborative online learning are provided, such as electronic mails and forums using OUM electronic delivery platform, the myLMS.

The myLMS is available for quick and easy online access to course information and multimedia learning materials. It also provides e-mail and forums for communication with fellow learners – facilitators – Programme Coordinator.

3. Face-to-Face Session

Face-to-face sessions are facilitator-led meetings with learners where issues related to course of study are discussed. These meetings are usually conducted during weekends. Regular face-to-face tutorials/seminars are conducted by highly qualified and experienced facilitators. These sessions are conducted once a month during weekends, with a total of 15 contact hours (that is, 3 meetings of 5 hours per meeting).
